Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:

  • People 65 or older
  • Certain people under 65 with disabilities

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) Part B covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).

How do I get Medicare parts A & B?

Some people get Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) automatically and other people have to sign up for it. In most cases, it depends on whether you’re getting Social Security benefits.

Prescription

All plans are required to cover a good sized range of prescription drugs that people with Medicare will need, including most drugs categorized in protected classes. Information about a plan’s list of covered drugs or “formulary”, varies by health plan. Many Medicare drug plans and health plans with drug coverage, place drugs into different “tiers” within their formularies. Drugs within different tiers have a different cost. For example, a drug in a lower tier will generally cost you less than a drug in a higher tier.
